The GW Department of Mathematics is committed to high-quality teaching and research. The undergraduate mathematics major has three tracks: pure, applied and computational. Each is designed to give students a solid background in the theory and practice of modern mathematics.

Mathematics can be pursued on its own or it can be paired with other fields, such as physics, engineering, economics, computer science, statistics, business, pre-med and biology.

What can I expect to learn in the Mathematics program at GW?

Our students can choose from a selection of topics in pure and applied mathematics, including abstract algebra, real and complex analysis, topology, logic, combinatorics, number theory, differential equations, differential geometry, numerical analysis, financial mathematics and mathematical modeling. Advanced undergraduates may choose to extend the range of options by taking independent studies and graduate classes.

What is the Mathematics community like at GW?

The mathematics department welcomes students at all levels. Our advanced classes are of moderate size, allowing for individual attention and interaction between faculty and students. We also help to make our majors and minors feel part of our community by encouraging problem-solving groups, offering talks and hosting other activities. 

What can I do in the Mathematics field?

Those holding degrees in mathematics have a foundation for a broad range of positions in government, education, industry, business and other areas. In addition to career opportunities in education, including higher education and research, mathematicians are employed by companies in the computer and communications industries, banks, insurance and financial services companies and consulting firms.
